Project Gemini is a collection of tools to assist symmetrical modeling. No more fumbling around with duplicate with symmetry and weld. The Gemini plug-in mirrors your modeling, welds the two halves together, and even cleans up the stray vertices in the middle saving you time and trouble.

Gemini Modifier

Use the Gemini modifier when modeling to see the symmetrical model in the Scene Preview window. 

  1. Enabled turns Gemini's effect on and off.
  2. Keep specifies which half of the mesh you want to retain and duplicate.
  3. Use Margin of Error so that you don't have to keep vertices exactly at the zero plane. Vertices within the Margin of Error will be moved to zero.

Gemini Command

Gemini Command is only available on Carrara 2.x. It takes a single selected object, applies all the objects existing modifiers, adds Gemini, and then creates a Vertex Modeler object with the result.

  1. Keep specifies which half of the mesh you want to retain and duplicate.
  2. Use Margin of Error so that you don't have to keep vertices exactly at the zero plane. Vertices within the Margin of Error will be moved to zero.
  3. Keep Original Object retains the original object and creates a new object. If this option is unchecked, the original object will be deleted.
  4. Default will reset the Gemini command to the original values.
  5. Last Run will pick up the selections from the last time you selected Edit|Gemini.

Note: Gemini Command will pick up the existing Gemini Modifier settings if you have one already on your object. 

Eraser

Eraser slices away your model resulting in a cut away view object your object.

  1. Enabled turns Eraser's effect on and off.
  2. Start Direction specifies which side is erased first.
  3. Erase controls how much of the object is removed.

How do I...

Install Project Gemini?

Extract and copy the files to the extensions or plugins directory.

For Carrara 8.0

On the PC, it is the Carrara8\Extensions directory. If you installed Carrara to the default location, this is C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\Carrara8\Extensions or C:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\Carrara8\Extensions.

On the Mac, OS X.

  1. Open the Carrara 8 folder.
  2. Ctrl-click on the Carrara application and select Show Package Contents.
  3. In the newly opened Finder window, navigate to Contents\MacOS\Extensions.
  4. Extract the contents of the ZIP and copy them there.

For Carrara 7.2

On the PC, it is the Carrara 7 Pro\Extensions directory. If you installed Carrara to the default location, this is C:\Program Files\DAZ\Carrara 7 Pro\Extensions.

On the Mac, OS X.

  1. Open the Carrara 7 folder.
  2. Ctrl-click on the Carrara application and select Show Package Contents.
  3. In the newly opened Finder window, navigate to Contents\MacOS\Extensions.

For Carrara 6.2.1

  1. Open the Carrara 5 folder.
  2. Ctrl-click on the Carrara application and select Show Package Contents.
  3. In the newly opened Finder window, navigate to Contents\MacOS\Extensions.
  4. Extract the contents of the ZIP and copy them there.

Enter my serial number?

After purchasing Project Gemini you will be emailed a serial number. If you open a scene with Project Gemini or use Project Gemini in a scene, the Enter Serial Number window will display. Enter your serial number in the field provided and click OK to continue.

Get starting using Project Gemini?

  1. Select File|New.
  2. Select Insert|Vertex.
  3. In the Model room select Insert|Sphere.
  4. Flip back to the Assemble room and apply the Gemini Modifier using the Modifiers button on the properties panel. Set Keep to Y Positive.
  5. Go back to the Model room and begin modeling. Move vertices around on the sphere where Y > 0 and you see them mirrored in the Scene Preview.
  6. When you are ready to synch up both sides of your model, use the Edit|Gemini command, available in the Assemble room, on your object.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Gemini works with the assumption you are doing symmetrical modeling, but that any vertices within the Margin of Error are really meant to be at zero. If you want an exact symmetrical model, use Eraser set on 50% and Gemini with a margin of Error of 0 together. 

Evaluation Mode

Project Gemini supports an evaluation mode which allows you to try out Project Gemini before purchasing it. When the Project Gemini Enter Serial Number window is displayed, just click Cancel to go into evaluation mode. During evaluation mode, Project Gemini will only work in the Z- direction.

  1. Changed where serial numbers are saved to a more modern OS friendly location. This fixes a problem with saving serial numbers on the 64-bit Windows Carrara when UAC is turned on.
