Toon! Pro is a cel shader and line renderer plug-in for Carrara. High quality anti-aliased lines, a powerful cel shader, and the ability to combine cel with traditional and even GI rendering makes Toon! Pro a must have tool for the digital cel artist.

Toon! Pro Cel shader

The Toon! Pro Cel shader provide the cel look for objects in your Carrara scenes. It's accessed by clicking the popup next to the Top Shader in the shader tree and selecting Toon! Pro cel.

  1. Shadow/Highlight specifies at what point the illumination is enough for an object to be considered in Shadow or Highlight.
  2. Levels controls the number of steps in the illumination between shadow and it's normal color.
  3. Shadow Brightness controls how dark the shadow areas are as a percentage of the base color.

Toon! Pro renderer

The Toon! Pro render provides the lines for the cel look.

  1. Line Size controls the thickness of the line. The value is the radius of the line in pixels.
  2. Line controls the color and blend with the underlying color.
  3. Use Obj Color will use the object's approximate color for the line color.
  4. Overdraw sets how far out of bounds the lines goes.
  5. Depth Cueing will narrow lines as they get farther from the camera. The slider controls how many inches of distance for the lines to become half the width.
  6. Use On Shading Domain Boundaries to draw lines on the edges of shading domains.
  7. On Edges Sharper Than looks for sharp edges in your mesh and draws lines at those points.
  8. The Backfaces Optimization sets whether or not Toon! Pro will draw lines on backfacing polygons and if it will use backfacing polygons to eliminate hidden lines. For most scenes this can safely be left on. If the Toon! Pro renderer is not drawing lines where you expect them or not removing hidden lines you expect it to, try turning this option off.
  9. Toon! Pro does antialiasing on the lines it draws by default, but for even smoother lines you can select Line Oversampling to increase the quality even further. Be advised that this will also increase Toon! Pro's memory usage.
  10. Alpha Content controls the contents of the Alpha channel if the Render Alpha Channel option is turned on. The options are to use the base renderer's alpha channel, the lines from Toon! Pro, or both merged.
  11. Do base render turns on and off the underlying Photorealistic renderer image. By default the back ground will be white when this is turned off, or it will pick up the color from the Background or Backdrop settings.

Toon! Pro Override effect

The Toon! Pro Override effect, available on the Effects tab of the properties panel let's you override line effects set on the renderer's UI. Here you can control the lines for an object or shading domain. Select the domain from the list and change line settings above.

  1. With the Synch All option selected, line changes are applied to all shading domains on the object
  2. Override for selected domain tells Toon! Pro to use the settings in Toon! Pro Override instead of the values in the Toon! Pro renderer for selected domain.
  3. Line Size controls the thickness of the line. The value is the radius of the line in pixels.
  4. Line controls the color and blend with the underlying color.
  5. Use Obj Color will use the object's approximate color for the line color.
  6. Overdraw sets how far out of bounds the lines goes.
  7. Depth Cueing will narrow lines as they get farther from the camera. The slider controls how many inches of distance for the lines to become half the width.
  8. Use On Shading Domain Boundaries to draw lines on the edges of shading domains.
  9. On Edges Sharper Than looks for sharp edges in your mesh and draws lines at those points.
  10. Turn off Remove Hidden Lines if you want a shading domain to not erase lines drawn behind it. This option would typically be used at the same time you turn the line size or effect to zero so no lines are drawn. For example if you were turning off the lines on the eyelash shading domain you will probaly also want to turn off Remove Hidden Lines so that domain does not erase any lines that might be behind it.
  11. Some edges will be on shading domain boundaries. You can use the up and down arrows to control the settings priority. If an edge borders two shading domains, it will use the settings from the shading domain highest on the list.

Toon! Pro Set Cel Lighting Model

To quickly set the Cel lighting model for an object with many shading domains, use the Set Cel Lighting Model function available under the Edit menu.

  4. Use the Default button to reset all the values to the Toon! Pro defaults.
  5. The Last Run button loads the settings from the last time the Set Cel Lighting Model function was run since Carrara started.

Enter my serial number?

After purchasing Toon! Pro you will be emailed a serial number. If you open a scene with Toon! Pro or use Toon! Pro in a scene, the Enter Serial Number window will display. Enter your serial number in the field provided and click OK to continue.

Get starting using Toon! Pro?

  1. Select File|New.
  2. Select Insert|Sphere.
  3. With the Sphere selected, switch to the Texture room.
  4. In the Top Shader, click the pop up the defaults to Multi Channel and select Toon! Pro Cel.
  5. Return to the Assemble room and select the Scene. Change the Background to Color and set the color to white.
  6. Switch to the Render room and change the Renderer to Toon! Pro. Change the Line Oversampling to 4x.
  7. Click Render and you're finished.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Toon! Pro uses the edges in the mesh to create lines. If you want a line in your image, it must be modeled that way in the mesh.
  2. Duplicate with symmetry doesn't always leave the surface normals in the right direction. If Toon! Pro is not rendering lines on a duplicated with symmetry mesh, try turning off the Backfaces Optimization or reversing the normals on the duplicate mesh.
  3. To make Toon! Pro Cel work with a layers list, create a new master shader and select Toon! Pro for the top most shader. Drag the layers list to the child slot of Toon! Pro Cel, then drag Toon! Pro Cel back to the original shader.

Evaluation Mode

Toon! Pro supports an evaluation mode which allows you to try out Toon! Pro before purchasing it. When the Toon! Pro Enter Serial Number window is displayed, just click Cancel to go into evaluation mode. During evaluation mode, the Toon! Pro cel shader will only work for a limited amount of time before you need to close and reopen Carrara and the Toon! Pro renderer will display every other block without the Toon! Pro lines.

Release Notes

June 08, 2010

  1. Changed where serial numbers are saved to a more modern OS friendly location. This fixes a problem with saving serial numbers on the 64-bit Windows Carrara when UAC is turned on.

Pricing

$39.95 US dollars for a single user license. The single user license includes the right to use the product with up to 5 render nodes using Carrara 5.0 Pro or better. Pricing is also available for a render node site license for use with Grid.
